Conning Tower

20/02/08

The hatch and conning tower are back from machining.  The company I used made a good job of skimming the tower and hatch rings flat.  Also the “O” ring groove has been added.  They have also put in the awkward looking 10 degree angle on the inside diameter of the groove that holds the O’ ring in place.

When I talked to the guys about the job, they told me they would have to weld something onto the outside of the hatch in order to get it held on the lathe.  But when I just collected it, apparently it managed to just fit without it, so that has saved me time cutting the thing off and also some labour charge.  However, they do charge £38/hour for machine work and I am dreading getting the bill for this job.
