Hatch

25/11/07

I followed the weld procedure as per the plans.  Three passes of weld.  One straight into the root was straight forward, and then two more as you would do for a standard fillet weld.  I was very concerned about heat distribution as I did not want anything to twist.  I  tried to spread it out by moving from one side of the hatch to the other and also giving it time to cool down.  There were some ominous creaking noises at times, but the granite held and kept it all flat.  The granite did break right at the end though.  Here the stainless ring is positioned on top of the now welded on ring.  You can see that its still flat.  The weld procedure shows a weld on the inside as well.  I’m thinking about how to hold this as I have to weld from the other side.  I know some people have had some problems with this.  I will have to see what people on the PSUSB message list think.
