Conning Tower

08/01/08

I had this weld professionally done in the end.   Its 316L stainless to A516 GR70.  You can see the white powder of the weld which is dye penetrant used to test the surface integrity of the weld.   A liquid dye is sprayed on and left to penetrate into any surface defects.  Its then cleaned off and a developer is sprayed or brushed on which then shows up any defects as the dye is drawn out like blotting paper.

Anyway, the ring and hatch are now complete and still flat which is what I was worried about.  Next I’m going to refit the tower brace and cut out the holes for the four viewports.
