Rings

07/04/08

When I made the rings some time ago, I have to admit that three of them were not quite right.  It was basically because when I rolled them, I did not get them exactly flat.  I cramped the top of the “T” part together to be in the centre of the 360 degree profile, which was right, but they ended up with a slight “S” shaped twist if you looked at them end on.  It wasn’t that bad, but I’ve decided that its not good enough.  So, I’ve had to make three again.  This is my alternative method.  The circle drawn onto the piece of wood gives me the exact inside diameter of the hull.  Here I position and weld the two 180 degree profiles together.  Then I’ve machined a load of small props to hold the ring profile in the centre of the top of the “T” piece.  The granite table is perfectly flat  so I am now happy that this ring has no twists in it at all.  This one is ready to now weld together.

It’s cost a fair bit of time and money to put this right.
