I applied the caulking to the deck as per the instructions.  I didn’t think this was going to take long but it took ages.  Once I’d started, I had to finish so I got Anita to help.  For once I had a more useful assistant than the dog.

First we applied the special tape to the bottom of each groove.  It was tricky to stick down straight and had to be poked in with blunt pencil.  I think this is to stop the caulking taking to the bottom of each groove so the wood can expand\contract.

Next, the caulking itself was applied with a sealant gun.  It’s the special “Saba” caulking and we applied it just proud of the grooves as per the instructions.  Although it spread easily from the gun, it was difficult to apply neatly and to the correct level.  It did say to “smooth it off with a spatula” but I tried that and it just smeared everywhere.  So, I opted to just leave it slightly proud of the grooves and hope for the best.  It takes six days to cure before you can cut the excess off and sand it smooth.
